Najum is a 25 year old female living in Uganda 9Nakivale refugee settlement0 since 2013. She is one of the current beneficiaries of the ongoing emergency employment and social support project implemented by VEDCO/UNDP in Palabek, Palorinya and Nakivale refugee settlements respectively. Najum is currently taking part in the 40 days of Cah For Work activities under the waste management sector.
After the completion of the first 20 days of work, Najum and other beneficiaries received a part payment of 400,000/- each, she was able to use this money to open up a small business shop selling beverages, chapattis, mandazi and tea. Being the bread winner at home, Najum is happy to be part of cash for work activities since it’s her first time to be employed ever since she joined the settlement.
She hopes to use the rest of her payment to secure school fees and other scholastic materials for her little brother Muhammed and also buy enough food for home. “I thank you so much VEDCO and UNDP for this opportunity that you gave me and my friends to work and get money, it is my first time to earn ever since I came here” Najum said.
