The AVRDC in collaboration with VEDCO (Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns), Makerere University School of Food Science, Biotechnology and Nutrition as well as NARO/NACRI are implementing a 3 year vegetable home garden scaling project. The project is focus on increasing household consumption of vegetables to enhance the nutritional status of the household members especially children below 5 years and women of reproductive age.
The project aims at combating micronutrient malnutrition by increasing the availability of micronutrients such as vitamins A, C, folate, iron and zinc. The major interventions of the project include: cultivation of diverse vegetable crops on small plots of land. These plots are usually located in close proximity to the home, enabling women (as the majority of home gardeners) to tend to the gardens among their mostly house-bound daily chores. The project is being implemented in the 2 districts of Mukono and Kiryandongo
