Integrated Value Chain Development Project

VEDCO in partnership with Farm Concern International (FCI) are currently undertaking a three year SeFaMaCo project focusing on promoting banana and sweet potato enterprises in the three districts of Luweero, Mubende and Mukono. The project is reaching out 20,380 h/h organized in 815 commercial producer groups of up to 167 commercial villages.

The goal of the project is to optimize profitability and productivity by catalyzing market oriented value chain- wide competitiveness and investments in bananas & sweet potatoes for increased household incomes”. The major focus of the project is on the following pillars/levels;

The major focus of the project is on the following pillars/levels;

  • Seed level:- Enhanced strategic investments in commercial seed enterprises responsive to market driven clean and quality banana and Sweet Potato, purchased by smallholder farmers;
  • Farmer level:- Commercialized smallholder farmers through increased productivity and yields of market preferred and nutri-dense varieties of banana and sweet potato strengthened Farmer Organizations for collective marketing and inclusion of youth and women as value producers;
  • Market level:- Increased market share of Banana and Sweet Potato through enhanced value chain efficiency, market partnerships and competitiveness in informal traditional markets and schools as demand catalysts for other distribution channels;
  • Consumer level:- Increased consumption of Bananas and Sweet Potato and enhanced consumer preference in rural and urban areas.
