Voluntary Promoters Commisioned
280 Promoters from Mukono and 276 promoters from Kamuli districts were commissioned in February and March 2009 respectively. The commissioning in Mukono took place at Nama sub county headquarters and the function was officiated by the area woman Member of Parliament for Mukono district Hon Nalugo Sekiziyivu while in Kamuli the function was honored by the LC5 chairman Mr. Stephen Mubiru in March at Bugulumbya sub county headquarters. The two functions were both entertained by drama groups developed and trained as part of the Reach end User Project implemented in collaboration with Harvest Plus. The Project is aiming at enhancing the adoption, utilization and consumption of beta-carotene rich sweet potato commonly called the Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato.
While handing over the tool kit to the promoters in Kamuli, the LCV chairman Mr. Stephen Mubiru encouraged farmers to grow more sweet potatoes the Basoga staple food locally called “Embooli” and integrating planting to mitigate the effects of climate change, while the executive Director of VEDCO Mr. Henry Kizito Musoke congratulated the promoters with caution to use the tool kit to fight the biting poverty other than creating it
The promoters are trained to disseminate project information on agricultural practices, marketing and nutrition through the farmer to farmer approach
This brings the total of Promoter so far trained and commissioned to five hundred and sixty.
